Diaglossia
Taki ng into account all social factors,we might imagine that mananging to say the right thing to the right person at the right time is a monumental social accomplishment.It is a major skill which language users must acquireovver and above other linguistic skiills such as pronunciation and grammer...in some societies,however,the choice of apppropriate linguistic   forms is made a little sraightforward because of diaglossia.This term is uused  to describe a situation in which ttwo vvery different varieties of language coexist in a speech community,each wiith a distinct range of social function.There is normally a high variety for formal  or serious matters and a low variety for conversation and other infomal uses.
A form of diaglossia exists in most Arabic speaking contrieswhere high or classical variety is used inlectures ,religious speech and formal political talk  while the low variety is the local dialect of the collquial Arabic.In Greek ,th ere also a high and a low  or demotic variety.In some situations the high variiety may be a quite seprate ntifiablelanguage.Throug long periods of Western European history,a diglossic situation existed with Latin as the high variety and local lanuages such as French and English as the low variety.Many of the factors  which give rise to linguistic variation are some times discussed in terms of cultural differences .It is not unusual to find linguistic features quoted as identifiableaspects of working class culture or African American culture.In many respects this view has been influnced by the work of anthropologists who tend to treat language as one element among others ,such as belief wihin the defintion of culture as socially acquired knowledge .given the process of culural transmission by which languages are acquired ,it makes alot of sense to emphasize the fact that linguistic variation is tied very much to the existence of different cultures.
