Context of Situationa Behaviour doesnot have only to be approppiateto the individual iit also needs toaa suitable for particular oocassions and situations.Thereare for examplesome circumstaces in which a woman who wore a skirt would also be in dangeroof bing lauged at.(A woman competing in a spring race or going for a swim in a skirt would be undoubetedlly look some whatin congruous to the point of inviting laughter)This is too has its contterpart in language .to give aboxing commentary in the language of the Bible or a parsh church sermon in legal language would be either abad mmistake,or a joke.Language in other words varies not only according to the social characteristics of the speaker(such as his social class, ethnic group ,age and sex)but also according to the sociall context in which he finds himself. The same speaker uses different linnguistic vareties in different situations and for different purposes. The totality of linguistic varieties used in this way -and they mmay be very many-by a particular community of sppeakers can be called that linguistic community`s vverball repertior. dwhich variety from this verbal repertior is actually to be us eds on a particular ocassion.Foor example ,if a speaker iis talking to the people he woorks with about his work ,his language iss liikely to be ratherdifferent from that he will use, say,at home with his family. The occupational situation will produce a distinct linguistic variety ,Occupational linguistic varieties of this kind have been termed "registers".Registers are usually characterised solely by vocabulary differences:either by the use of pparticular words or by the use of words in a pparticular sense. Many other factors connected with situation in which language is being used over and above occupation will also have a linguistic effect.Language varies ,foe example ,according to whether it is written oor spoken .Other thinngs being equal, written Engllish is more formal than spoken English, and the same sort of differences occur iin other languages. Similarly the kind of subject matter that is under discssion will have an effect ,in addition to that of register,on thee language produced.Topics such as molecular biology or intternational economics are likely to produce linguistic varieties which are more formal than those used in the diiscussion of knitting or roller-skating.Thde pphsical setting and ocassion of the language activity will also have some consequences.Fpor instance, academic llectures and cermonial oocassions are more likely to select relatively formal language than,say,public-house argumments or family breakfasts.
