 Language, culture and   society

The way we speak is influenced by regional dialects to where you spent most of your early life . The way we speak is influenced by social dialects. Speech may also contain a number of features which are not related to regional  variation. Two people growing up in the geographical area may speak differently because of a number of social factors

It is important not to overlook this social aspect of language because speech is a form of social identity. It is used, consciously or unconsciously, to indicate membership of     different social group or different speech communities. A speech communities is a group of people who share a set of  norms, rules and expectation regarding the use of language.Invesigating language from this perspective is known as sociolinguistics.

Sociolinguistics

Sociolinguistics deals with the inter-relationships between language and society. It has strong connection to anthropology, through the investigation of language and culture. It has also connection with sociology through the crucial role that language plays in the organization of social groups and institutions. It is also tied to social psychology, especially with regard to how attitudes and perception are expressed. All these connections are needed if we are to make sense of social dialects.

Social dialects

Social dialects are varieties of L- used by groups according to class, education, age, sex, and a number of there social parameters. In modern studies of L- variation, agreat deal of care is taken document, via questionnaires, details of the social background of speakers. The result of such details is to make a study of social dialects. There is an interaction between social values and L-use.T he concept of prestige is understood in   terms of overt prestige, that is,the generally recognized better or positively valued ways  of speaking in social communities. The hidden type of positive value is often attached to non-standard forms and expressions by certain sub-group.The use of non-standard forms are considered as markers of social solidarity.

Social class and education

The obvious factorsin investigation of social dialects are social class and education. In some dialect surveys, thre is a tendency to use infrequent forms in the speech of those who left the educational system at an early age. These forms are infrequent in the speech of those who go on to college.Expressions such as them  boys throwed  something are much more common in the speech of the former group than the latter.

The socia classes also sound different.
