THE VERB AND THE VERB PHRESE
After dealing with the first introductory chapter,which was the second one,this lecture is specified for the second item in the syllabus which is the second main element in the sentence which is the verb.
The verb is classified according to three main classifications.The first one depends on what comes after the main verb.The second one depends on its semntic characteristics.The last one depends on the fuction of the verb in the sentence.According to the first classification,the verb is either intensive or extensive,as:
He is clever -
He became a doctor -
He smiled -
He gave me a flower -
. She bought her a dress -
If it is intensive ,it means that the complement is either a noun or an adjective
When it is extensive it contains two types :
the intransitive,which is followed by no object,or transitive,which cntains three types:monotransitve,ditransituve,and complex transitive.
As in :
They are nice -
The room became clean-
She laught -
I passed the exam -
They elected him the chairman -
I found them eating-
The second kind of classification,which depends upon the verb and its meanig,revelles two types:
Stative
Dynamic
The stetive verb is used to discribe the thing or the person ,i,e. it is an action which involves no movement ,as in;
He is lazy-
It gives the person s characterstics.In fact,there are some group of verbs that are cosidered as stative ,as verb to be and some mental verb and cognition verbs.
