course sheds light on the relationship between lThis anguage and society. These two dimensions affect each other. In that one cannot stes one without taking heed of the other. Some problems pose themselves here concerning the delineation of the concept"language".Sociolinguists donot agree among them selves in relation to what language is.But before tackling this subject in detail ,we need to pinpoint and illuminate other concepts in this regard.Lets start unravelling these spot problems by posing certain questions: Is language distinct from dialect and accent? Does language vary according to different contexts? Does language signal class membership? Are men and women speak differently etc..Whether or notyou think you speak a standard varietyof English, you will certainly speak with an accent. It is a myth that some speakers have accents while others do not. Some speakers may have distinct or easily recognized accent while others donot, but every language user speaks with an accent.Accent technically speaking is restricted to aspects of pronunciation which identify where the speaker is from, regionally or socially. It is to be distinguished from "dialect" which describes features of grammar and vocabulary as well as aspects of pronunciation. The drawing of dialect boundries is useful in establishing a broad view of regional dialects, though most boundries merge into another. As such,we can view regional variations as existing along a coontinuum and not as havng sharp breaks from one region to the next..Peopl e who move back and forth this continuum using different varieties with ease may be described as bidialectal.
